Huge success for Switzerland: Out of a record number of 2,601 applications from all over the world and 130 startups that were chosen to pitch at the Global Grand Final Event in Amsterdam, the startup Enerdrape from Switzerland won 3rdplace!
This year, ClimateLaunchpad, the world’s biggest cleantech business ideas competition, received a total of 2,600 applications from over 50 countries from all over the world. On the 14thand 15thof November, 130 startups as well as National Leads, Trainers, ClimateLaunchpad alumni and partners came together in Amsterdam for the Global Grand Final 2019.
After having won the Swiss National Final in September 2019, the two Swiss startups Enerdrape and Ponera had the chance to present their green business ideas to the jury in Amsterdam. Enerdrape develops modular geothermal panels and aims to harvest energy from unused surfaces such as parking garages to provide renewable heating and cooling.
Ponera has designed a new sustainable, modular, reusable pallet configuration. It is a recyclable biopolymer-based pallet that results in a significant decrease in fuel consumption and aims to revolutionize the goods’ transport.
semi-finals and theme awards
On Day 1 of the Grand Final event in Amsterdam, the semi-finals took place. The 130 startups that had made it to the Global Grand Final were split into 8 different groups and had to pitch their ideas to different juries. The juries selected one startup per group as a finalist for the second day. In addition, there were three wild cards. The announcement of all the finalists, however, wasn’t until the morning of Day 2.
On Friday morning, everyone met in the big hall for the announcement of the 16 finalists and Swiss startup Enerdrape was among them! This meant that we would see co-founder of Enerdrape, Margaux Peltier, on stage once again later that day! Prior to the big event, both Swiss startups were also selected to pitch for Theme Awards. Therefore, both Enerdrape and Ponera pitched their ideas once again in the morning of Day 2: Enerdrape competed for the “Carbon Tech” Theme Award and Ponera for “Clean Mobility”.
And the winner is...
After several expert sessions and a key note speech, it was then time for the ClimateLaunchpad Global Grand Final. Each of the 16 finalists had exactly five minutes to present their green business idea to the jury. Each pitch was followed by a three-minute Q&A. And then, after a break in which the jury made its final decision, it was time for the award ceremony. The jury announced the top 3 startups of the 6thedition of ClimateLaunchpad and Switzerland was among the winners:
Enerdrape achieved 3rd place and won € 2,500!
Maclec from India won 2ndplace and € 5,000. They harness hydro power from surface veolocity of slow moving streams.
And the overall winner of ClimateLaunchpad 2019 was Leafy Ke from Kenya. They convinced the jury with their business idea to convert used diapers to make fuel for homes. They won € 10,000.
The entire 2019 Top 16 will go on to the EIT Climate-KIC Accelerator. Huge CONGRATULATIONS to all the winners!
